Late to view via Netflix didn't realise had been out a while on terrestrial television. The actor's playing Huntley and Carr wre fantastic. Don't agree at all it was disrespectful,they are numerous true crime documentaries on this with talking heads,etc. DIdn't feel sorry for anyone other than the victim's and family. It wasn't in my opinion filmed towards portraying Maxine as a victim. We all have our own opinions on this. But as a drama reconstruction it was really good. Every serial killer’s life is now repeatedly picked over – the likes of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Dennis Nilsen and others have all recently had more dramas and documentaries devoted to their deeds. Extraordinary, awful stories like the Jan Broberg kidnappings by her family’s paedophile friend and neighbour have been told in both factual and fictional form in the past five years. The axe murder of Betty Gore by her fellow Texan housewife Candy Montgomery is the basis for a drama starring Jessica Biel this week and another starring Elizabeth Olsen next year. They never stop coming.The best of them justify their presence on our screens. They add insight; analyse attitudes; interrogate procedures, police failures and social prejudices; and sharpen our awareness of the obstacles that stand in the way of justice. The worst of them pander to our baser instincts while we snack on the sofa and marvel at the suffering humanity can inflict and endure.In the middle are those like Maxine (Channel 5), a three-part drama about the Soham murders 20 years ago, which feel merely utterly pointless. It is ostensibly about the part Maxine Carr played in covering up the deaths of 10-year-old best friends Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells. She was a teaching assistant in their class and the fiancee of Ian Huntley, a school caretaker, who lured them into his home when they were on their way to buy sweets and took both their lives.It’s a perfectly serviceable script and the two leads – newcomer Jemma Carlton as Carr and Line of Duty’s Scott Reid as Huntley – wring every bit of truth and nuance out of it that they can. There is a great, grave performance from Steve Edge as Brian Farmer, the local journalist who is the first to become suspicious of Huntley. And, although it is a sign of much of what is wrong elsewhere, possibly the most moving scene belongs to Shane Nestor as a stricken headteacher, as he goes back over the file containing Huntley’s job application and realises that the required background checks, which would have shown something of his history of physical and sexual violence towards women and underage girls, were never done.Virtually all other characters are banished to the periphery. The police investigating the case are no more than ciphers, and Jane (Natalie Britton), the brash London journalist, is there to do no more than enable an underbaked exploration of press freedom and journalistic responsibility (possibly to preempt some of the criticisms I’m about to make anyway).The fundamental problem with Maxine is that not all murders have much to teach us. Huntley is a classic illustration of the banality of evil – a predator who took his opportunity, as predators have always done (and at roughly the rates they have always done, although the reporting frequency has increased), and after years of getting away with horrible, shocking but lesser crimes, was finally caught. And Carr gave him the alibi he needed out of a combination of love, weakness, childhood damage and fear, just as women have always done for the violent men they live with. But little of this is explored in Maxine. It spends more time on her apparent love of the attention from the press and police than it does on the effects of the abusive relationship she was in with Huntley, or anything that occurred in her childhood. In concentrating on her part in covering up the murders (of which she had no knowledge, though growing doubts), which is not comparable to the actual killing of two children and which was easily knocked down by the police once they got their act together, the drama skates perilously close to equating her behaviour with Huntley’s and following the age-old tradition of blaming the nearest woman for what a man has done.If there’s a meaningful story behind the Soham tragedy still to be told it is the failure to stop Huntley before he escalated to child murder. He was known to the police and social services after being accused of rape, underage sex and violence on numerous occasions. None of the arrests or charges resulted in a trial. His predilections were known locally and the Bichard inquiry set up after his murder conviction found that police had failed to share evidence and had deleted vital files about the risk he posed. Where’s the show about that? Maxine is a British three-part television drama miniseries, based on the story of Maxine Carr's involvement in the 2002 Soham murders, where 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman were killed by Carr's boyfriend Ian Huntley. It was first broadcast in the United Kingdom on Channel 5 in October 2022.[2]

Cast[edit]

The series features Jemma Carlton, in her first television role, as Maxine Carr, and Scott Reid as Ian Huntley. Other cast members include Steve Edge and Kate O'Toole.[2]

Critical reception[edit]

The series was received poorly by critics, with a review by Lucy Mangan in The Guardian describing it as "a show about the Soham murders that is both pointless and dangerous",[3] while The Independent quoted a viewer as labelling it as being in "absurdly bad taste".[4] According to the Daily Mirror, "several Channel 5 viewers found it hard to stomach, particularly as they claimed that the drama seemed to be portraying Carr as a 'victim'".[5] Channel 5 defended the decision to produce the series, with director of programmes Ben Frow being quoted as saying "it's not about the murders, it's about a woman who came from a very challenging upbringing" and "I think we have been deeply respectful to the victims, whilst shining a light on some very challenging issues".[6]

Maxine is a drama that follows the role played by Maxine Carr in the infamous murders of Soham schoolgirls Holly and Jessica by evil killer Ian Huntley.

Maxine 5 follows the evil Soham Murders, and stars Scott Reid as Ian Huntley with Jenna Carlton as Maxine Carr.

Maxine is a true-life drama that gives a new perspective on the 2002 murders of Soham schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, turning the spotlight onto school assistant Maxine Carr. This tragic case from 2002 shocked the nation and the initial disappearance of the two 10-year-old school friends from the town of Soham in Cambridgeshire, UK, led to the biggest manhunt in British history. With newcomer Jemma Carlton playing Maxine and White House Farm’s Scott Reid playing Ian Huntley, this three-part drama will examine the investigation into Maxine and her caretaker boyfriend Ian Huntley, who was later imprisoned for the murders. It delves into Maxine’s tumultuous relationship with Huntley, examines why she lied to the police for him and shows how she came to be regarded as "the most hated woman in Britain".Filming for the three-part drama started in Ireland in May 2022. This story focuses on Huntley and Carr's difficult relationship and examines why she decided to lie for him, which led to her imprisonment in 2003 for perverting the course of justice. This is her first lead role but she did also star in the 2018 comedy movie Detective Dover, playing Stacy Goff. Speaking to whattowatch.com about playing Carr, Jemma says: "I  watched hours and hours of documentaries before we started filming. There's  a lot of footage of Maxine from interviews she did at the time so that was useful in terms of trying to nail her physicality and her voice."The research team worked so hard to create a timeline of events that was as accurate as possible so we could tell this story truthfully."Jemma Carlton watched hours of footage to research the role of Maxine Carr. (Image credit: Channel 5)Scott Reid is playing school caretaker Ian Huntley whose media interviews and crocodile tears alerted the police to his guilt. Scott is best known for playing DC Mick Clark in the ITV true crime series White House Farm. He also starred in Line of Duty, Still Game, Carnival Row and Deadwater Fell, plus he played Nigel in the 2020 movie The Forgotten Battle. When asked if he had any reservations about playing such a reviled person Scott told us: "After meeting the director and hearing about the care, diligence and respect that the channel was approaching it with, I knew the story was going to be told in the right way and that eased any concerns or worries and gave me the confidence to go forward with it."Scott Reid playing DC Mick Clark in White House Farm. (Image credit: ITV)Did the families of Holly and Jessica have any input into this dramatisation? Scott Reid told us: "One of the assurances made to myself and Jemma at the start was that the channel had reached out to the families and also a lot of people involved in the case, whether that be people who worked at the school or lived in Soham. We were assured that everybody was given the time, respect and reached out to with the utmost care that they all deserve." Location news — where was Maxine filmed? The drama Maxine was filmed outside Dublin, Ireland in the coastal town of Bray. Scott Reid says: "We didn't film in Soham itself and I think that was a good decision as it allowed us to be in an environment where the case wasn’t so fresh in people’s minds. It also allowed us to be away from the press who always want  a sneaky peak of filming." How did Scott and Jemma find the experience of portraying such dark events? Scott Reid says: "As soon as I hear the director say ‘cut’  I'm back to being Scott. I'm only interested in doing my work, being diligent and focusing on the task at hand. Once a scene is done, beyond worrying about my next scene I’m just trying to just live in the moment. Ultimately this is a dramatisation and we’re creating a programme." Jemma told us: "I agree. With Maxine I was able to take off the make-up, the hair, the contact lenses at the end of the day so that helped. I also liked listening to music. I listened to a lot of  Paolo Nutini  filming this (the Scottish singer-songwriter) and I also made a playlist from 2003, the year of the case, so there was a lot of Gareth Gates ( the pop singer and first ever winner of Pop Idol)."Scott and Jemma had to film some dark events.
